Understanding Developmental Screening
Universal developmental screening means that all young children in partner locations are screened regularly to check whether they are meeting important developmental milestones. This approach helps: Prevent delays by identifying concerns early Provide timely intervention when developmental challenges are detected Offer 2Gen (two-generation) supports, which address the needs of both children and their parents The 2Gen approach recognizes that children thrive when their caregivers are supported. By connecting families to resources—such as parenting guidance, mental health services, early intervention, and community programs—parents feel confident and equipped to support their child’s growth. Ultimately, the goal is for: Parents to feel empowered and confident in supporting their child’s development Children to receive early support when needed Children to enter school healthy, thriving, and ready to learn This comprehensive, prevention-focused strategy strengthens families while promoting positive early childhood outcomes.
What are Developmental Milestones?
Developmental milestones are age-specific skills and behaviors that most children can do by a certain age. They reflect typical growth in key areas of development, including: Physical (motor) skills – rolling over, sitting, walking, grasping objects Language and communication – babbling, saying words, following simple directions Cognitive skills – problem-solving, recognizing familiar people, learning cause and effect Social and emotional development – smiling, playing with others, expressing feelings Organizations like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics provide milestone checklists to help parents and professionals understand what is typically expected at different ages. Why is Developmental Screening Important in Early Childhood? Developmental screening is a short screening tool that provides parents, caregivers and providers with specific information about a child’s developmental strengths and is used specifically to identify any potential delays in a child’s development Early Identification of Delays Some developmental delays are not obvious. Screening helps detect concerns early, even before a child starts school Early Intervention Improves Outcomes The earlier a delay is identified, the sooner intervention can be provided - intervention could include completing specific activities to strengthen development, parent coaching to support your child’s identified needs, speech language, occupational therapy or other resources that can strengthen your child’s skills. Supports School Readiness Addressing delays early helps children build the foundational skills needed for learning and social interaction. Promotes Overall Child Well-being Regular screening ensures children receive appropriate care and support during critical periods of brain development.
