Let's Get Ready for K!

Serving children and families throughout St. George, Jefferson, Nobleboro, and neighboring communities.

Why Kindergarten Readiness Matters

Kindergarten readiness is about much more than knowing letters and numbers. It reflects a child’s overall development across language, early literacy, social-emotional skills, self-regulation, problem-solving, and physical development. Children who enter school ready to learn are more likely to experience academic success, build positive relationships, and develop the confidence needed to thrive throughout their educational journey.

The science is clear: the first five years of life are the most important period of brain development. During these years, children’s brains form the architecture that supports learning, behavior, relationships, and health for the rest of their lives. Early experiences and responsive relationships literally shape brain architecture, creating the foundation for future cognitive, social, and emotional development.

Research has consistently found that children who are kindergarten ready are more likely to:

  • Read proficiently by third grade.
  • Achieve higher scores in reading and mathematics throughout school.
  • Graduate from high school.
  • Experience fewer behavioral and disciplinary challenges.
  • Develop the executive functioning skills needed for lifelong success.
Kindergarten Readiness Skills
